Jarake Wildlife Sanctuary

Jarake Wildlife Sanctuary is a registered charitable organisation situated on 130 acres of land, comprising a 100-acre conservation area, adjacent to the Glenbog State Forest in South East New South Wales. We have constructed over three acres of specialised wildlife enclosures dedicated to the care and wellbeing of wombats, macropods, possums, gliders and birds, all of which are monitored via an infra-red close circuit vision security system. Our team spearheads an extensive mange treatment program for free-living wombats. We have undertaken numerous initiatives, including hosting film and documentary productions, researching wildlife, protecting wombats and their burrows during logging operations, and installing New South Wales' first Virtual Fencing solution to safeguard wildlife from motor vehicle accidents. Our ongoing activities include wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release, authorised by Wildlife Rescue South Coast.

MANGE TREATMENT

After several years of operating a successful mange treatment program using Moxidectin, we undertook a research project in collaboration with Charles Sturt University, the Wombat Protection Society of Australia, and Southern Cross Wildlife Care Hospital. Our objective was to validate that administering more appropriate doses of Moxidectin remains the most efficient, secure, and prompt approach presently available for treating wombat mange in the field. We collected blood samples, hair samples, and faeces from wild wombats before and after Moxidectin application for almost 18 months. The pharmacokinetics of the samples were analysed at Charles Sturt University, resulting in groundbreaking outcomes.

Films and Documentaries

Jarake has had the privilege of serving as the host location for numerous film crews, capturing captivating footage of native animals in their natural habitats for documentaries, television shows, and movies. Among the notable titles filmed at Jarake are the "Secret Life of the Wombat," a widely-distributed television series consisting of two episodes titled "Wombat Wood" and "A Joey's Journey," which aired on major networks such as Sky, Animal Planet, Paramount, and more. Additionally, Jarake was featured in "Australia Remastered," which aired on ABC, and "Kangaroo Valley," which was showcased on Netflix. Another movie also called "Wombat Wood" will soon be released on IMAX, and another documentary is presently in development.

Wildlife Safety Solution on the Roads

We are proud to have coordinated and implemented New South Wales' initial trial site of the "Virtual Fence," the Wildlife Safety Solution, situated along Old Bega Rd near Nimmitabel, designed to deter and decrease motor vehicle incidents with wildlife. The initiative was sponsored by the Humane Society International and NSW Transport, and the Snowy Monaro Shire Council provided valuable support in the installation process. We gather and offer critical information to Western Sydney University and Charles Sturt University. Our research paper, "Can Virtual Fences Reduce Wombat Road Mortalities?" was published in the prestigious Ecological Engineering Journal in 2021, further showcasing the effectiveness and potential of this groundbreaking approach.

Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release

Ray and Marie are reputable individuals who hold authorisation to rescue, rehabilitate and release native animals under Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc. Their expertise and care extend to a range of species, including wombats, kangaroos, wallabies, possums, gliders and birds. The duo handles a broad spectrum of rescue situations, from small furless joeys to large adult male kangaroos. Their rescue methods are customised to the species, age of the victim, location, and the reason behind its rescue. Rehabilitation involves nurturing orphans, tending to the injured, and managing the victim's recovery and adaptation to the wild. Successful release is a remarkable achievement, and Ray and Marie continue to monitor released animals throughout their lives, where feasible. Fires and Floods

Jarake has been effected by both fires and floods and are as well prepared as possible for future disasters. In 2018, fires came within 200 meters of enclosures, the 2019-2020 fires came roaring towards us and then changed direction just in time. Multiple flooding events have caused damage to burrows and infrastructure.
