Wildlife Safety Solution

Animal road mortalities, particularly during dawn and dusk, have long been a concern due to their impact on wildlife populations and risks posed to motorists. To address this issue, we collaborated with Humane Society and NSW Transport to implement the first virtual fencing system in New South Wales in March 2020 along Old Bega Road near Nimmitabel. The system employs a combination of sound and light stimuli that are triggered by vehicle headlights to alert and repel animals from the roadside. The virtual fence is formed by devices placed at 25-metre intervals on alternating sides of the road, which are activated in sequence by approaching vehicles. To evaluate the effectiveness of this technology, a research project was conducted in conjunction with Western Sydney University and Charles Sturt University. The resulting study, 'Can virtual fences reduce wombat road mortalities?', was published in the Ecological Engineering journal in 2021. We are committed to continuing our efforts to protect wildlife and enhance road safety, and we are proud to have pioneered this innovative solution in collaboration with our partners."
